[edit] Vision

By 2020 most services and products will be developed with User Driven Open Innovation Approaches and most virtual-real Products/Services will be co-created with the contribution of Virtual Professional Communities.

In such context innovation processes will evolve in a way that not only Living Labs and Testbeds but also individuals and SMEs become key innovation players.

Indeed more than three-quarters of executives said they believe the greatest innovations of the 21st century will be those that address human needs, such as improved health and environmental quality, better energy security and increased access to education. But it’s clear that innovation for profit alone simply won’t cut it today. (source?)

Second, individuals and smaller enterprises can be just as important to the innovative process as the big guys (75 percent said these groups will be as innovative as large companies in the 21st century).

[edit] Mission

The Living Labs Thematic Domain Networks mission consists in generating value through members’ interaction, sharing and co-creation. These Domain Networks allow all players to launch new initiatives and transform social capital into business and make available all the resources and assets. In such context The mission will allow individuals and SMEs to take its part up in the innovation process and achieve the above vision by sharing:

  • Innovation Opportunities;
  • Research Challenges;
  • Resources (both technology infrastructures and Human Resources).

[edit] Governance

All decisions and responsibility are taken, as far as possible, at P2P level. As a result, for instance, the Thematic Domain Network related business activities are fully endorsed by the network members. The participation to Domain Network activities, in terms of both quantity (which percentage of their working time) and typology (which kind of activities, such as research, industrial application, internal projects etc.), is decided by the member itself on a voluntary basis.

The organisation of Domain Networks collaborative activities is left, as much as possible, to the actors actually performing those activities. When there is the necessity for subjective evaluation (e.g. project selection and award, prize award, quality control, subjective performance metrics ) this is done by assembling an ad–hoc peer committee which is empowered to undertake the decision.

[edit] The setting-up of Living Labs Domain Networks

It is proposed to be organized as per the following processes:

  • The identification of the members participating in the Domain Networks
  • The awareness of the members of the Domain Networks and their role and potentialities in its participation
  • The identification of common resources, assets, practices and experimentation information
  • The process of sharing these information with the adoption of a virtual catalogue organized per Domain Network
  • The organization of thematic Domain Network Living Lab Prizes
  • The identification of the Living Labs able to conduct pilot experimentations deriving from the different Prizes
  • Establishment of a International Expert team for the evaluation of the Living Lab prize ideas

[edit] Transversal working groups

In the processes for the classification of the relevant Thematic Domain Networks an important result was the identification of specific horizontal (or transversal) themes that are useful for all the vertical domains, for which involved organizations have expressed an interest in establishing transversal working groups:

  • Including design discipline in system development
  • Assessing and influencing Users’ behaviours
  • Designing and measuring Users’ Experiences
  • Including Service Science discipline in Service Innovation

Several activities could be considered as well as horizontal domains going across all vertical domains, such as: Exchange design practices; Exchange on tools supporting co-creation; Exchange of information on innovation projects (share problems and solutions); Share experiments
