Cross-Border Cooperation and Innovation for Life Quality

Slovenia has a small open economy, increasingly exposed to international competition. For small countries managing technological and social development has become very complex and requires a coordinated approach to the development of innovation and technological potential by the end-users, SME´s, corporations, the public sector and academia. For that reason, a group of business, government and academic representatives has proposed the »Innovation for Quality of Life – Slovenia Living Lab” country-wide initiative in July 2007 (http://SloveniaLivingLab.org ).

A few research & development pilot projects of the highest relevance should be carried out delivering holistic ICT based solutions in the fields such as: eHealth, eInclusion, Disaster eResponse, eInvoicing and eProcurement, Intelligent Traffic Solutions, etc. These high added-value solutions shall bring synergy for additional and new business opportunities and life quality improvement in general. One of the most important objectives of the initiative is cross-border cooperation that will enable implementation of holistic solutions in the regions involved, helping citizens and organisations to become the most successful users of ICT solutions and services.

- eLivingLab (http://eLivingLab.org ) Faculty of Organizational Sciences, University of Maribor,

- Slovenian Automotive Living Lab (http://www.acs-giz.si/ang/home.asp ) Automotive Cluster of Slovenia,

- Slovenian ICT Technology Network (http://www.ict-slovenia.net/index.php?lang=en).

  • 19 TRAIL Living Lab@ University of Ulster (UK)

http://trail.ulster.ac.uk/

The TRAIL (Technologies for Rurality, Ageing and Independent Living) lab represents the development of innovation and research thinking in Northern Ireland to support independent living across several key disciplines including business, information & communication technologies, occupational therapy, art, health care, social care and clinical medicine. Based at the University of Ulster, TRAIL is focused on supporting this diverse set of stakeholders as we develop new technologies, research perspectives, processes and integrated service solutions that deliver real value to our users, the ageing people in the North of Ireland and further afield across Europe.

The change in health and social care service delivery to accommodate demographic and rural changes has large-scale implications for the redevelopment of healthcare infrastructures, their service provision and associated research. This is resulting in a shift in the allocation of resources from tertiary-care institutions towards the preventative management at the primary care level, as well as delivering services to individuals in their own home where they are likely to be most cost-effective.

In TRAIL, we develop innovative research that explores the implications of these changes and how they can promote sustainable collaboration between public, private and voluntary service providers. We utilise academic, business and community partnerships focused on participative research and design, encompassing living lab and open innovation methodologies and practices.

Each day in the Open days, we welcome visitors for discussions and coffee. We also would like to organise a workshop of living labs and health.
