  • Abstract

RFID is an important innovation in retail. This paper highlights different application areas along the retail supply chain – from manufacturers to the retail store and all the way to the consumer. It describes both the technical solutions and the benefits for the stakeholders within different application scenarios. The application of RFID in retail still faces some problems and barriers. These are discussed within the context of European radio frequency regulations, European research policy and the general necessity for communication and education and an improved collaboration of supply chain partners. An outlook for developments in the near and extended future is presented.

  • Short Bio

Dr. Gerd Wolfram is Managing Director of MGI METRO Group Information Technology GmbH and is responsible for the business unit Advanced Technologies. He aligns the whole Information Technology in the company at METRO´s corporate goals (IT-Strategy) and is also responsible for purchasing the required hard- and software and IT services for the METRO Group (IT-Procurement). Furthermore he cares for the search, selection and implementation of new IT innovations (Research and Innovation).

Since mid-2002, Dr. Gerd Wolfram, who holds a doctorate degree in business administration, has been managing one of the most innovative projects of the METRO Group: The Future Store Initiative. The initiative was launched by the METRO Group and renowned partner companies. With the METRO Group Future Store Initiative modern technologies and systems are advanced and tested under real-live conditions.

He is also a member of national and international committees which promote the standardization of logistics and merchandise management processes in the context of radio frequency identification (RFID). At the international standardization organizations EPCglobal and GS1 Germany he represents the METRO Group in several project groups. Dr. Wolfram also leads the research group Information and Communication Technologies (IKT) at the European retail representation EuroCommerce.

  • "Collaborative innovation in the Secured Communicating Solutions (SCS) Cluster : actions and challenges"

  • Abstract

The SCS Cluster is one of the 6 French World-class Clusters recognized by the French Government in 2005. This ICT Cluster located in the South East of France is made of over one hundred members from large international Companies, SMEs, Start ups, Public Research Laboratories and Universities. With such a diversity of actors and with competences ranging from microelectronics to software applications and telecommunications, The Cluster had to implement specific actions to stimulate collaborative projects and several challenges had to be faced both at the governance and at the technical level.

  • Short Bio

Laurent Londeix is currently Director of the France Telecom Research & Development Centre in Sophia Antipolis. He is a board member of the "Secured Communication Solutions" Cluster of Excellence and the past President of the Telecom Valley, a business association of over 100 Telecom and IT companies in the Sophia Antipolis area. He has hold various managing positions in the Telecom Industry over the last 20 years (CIO of Intelig, a Brazilian Operator, Billing and CRM Project Director for Telkom SA in South Africa, International Business Development manager for Sofrecom Software activity, Product Manager for USWEST in Denver, USA, for an electronic bill payment system, Corporate Sales Manager in Paris for France Telecom,..). Laurent Londeix has and MBA from the Theseus Institute and a Telecom Engineering degree from INT (French National Institute of Telecommunications)

  • Keynote speaker: Jean-Pierre Euzen, Head of Sector, New Infrastructure Paradigms & Experimental Facilities, Information Society and Media, European Commission

  • Abstract

A "Living Lab" is a system and environment for building a future economy in which real-life user-centric innovation will be the normal co-creation technique for new products, services and societal infrastructures. Last November, 20 Living Lab sites across Europe join forces as a network, to develop and offer a gradually growing set of services. The speaker will introduce the European Commission support to Living Labs and will develop the foreseen evolution of the European Network of Living Labs.

Mr. Jean-Pierre EUZEN started working as an Engineer within a very large international Telecommunications supplier company. Then, as a Project manager, he designed and developed public switching systems as well as real-time computers used to control digital telephonic exchanges. During two years he represented his company within a Californian computer designer. In 1988, he took the position of “Manager Intelligent Networks” within the company’s headquarters. He joined the European Commission in 1992, where, after having been Head of Sector “Research Networks”, he became Deputy Head of Unit dealing with “Electronic Commerce” and “New Working Environments”, and is currently in charge of Living Labs activities.

  • Abstract

Professional Communities will evolve into business organisations, capable of fulfilling the KBS (Knowledge Business Social) expectations of Knowledge Workers and of boosting their creativity and productivity potential . KBS Communities will become direct employer of Knowledge workers, and will act as partner in Networked Organizations for the development of new service-product solutions, providing the disciplinary knowledge that today is integrated within the organisational structure of large enterprises.

Chair of the “Ambient Intelligence (AMI@ Work) Family of Communities” initiative launched by the European Commission for supporting innovation of Collaborative Working Environments.

  • Title: "Policy Dimensisons relating to CE vision 2015/ The Living Lab Network Paradigm"
  • Keynote speaker: Angelos Ktenas, Senior Policy Co-ordinator, New Infrastructure Paradigms & Experimental Facilities, Information Society and Media, European Commission
  • Abstract

The i2010 policy initiative revision scheduled for 2008 and the new FP7 bi-annual work programme 2009-2010 foreseen for 2009 will mark the first phase of the preparation of the CE Vision for 2015. Until now the European Network of Living Labs (ENoLL), launched on 20 November 2006, has been progressing within the framework of the 2007-2008 roadmap, as presented during this launch, with some necessary adaptations. It is foreseen in this roadmap that the ENoLL will join the CIP programme, the FP7 "research infrastructure" programme and probably also the Regio Initiatives in the period 2007 to 2008. By doing so, the way is paved for the finalisation of the functioning of the ENoLL and based on these same policies and programmes the new vision of 2015 will be designed starting from 2009/2010 onwards.

Dr Angelos Ktenas holds a Chemical Engineer Degree from the Ecole d’Application des hauts polymers (Strasbourg) and a Ph D in Chemical Engineering from the National Metsobio Technical University (Greece). After 15 years of managing positions in Chemical/Petrochemical industry and Greek Administrations, he has been during 9 years member of successively two cabinets of EU Commissioners. Since 1999, he is holding different leading positions in the DG Information Society at the EC, in particular in the Areas of: Application relating to Business, eBusiness, ICT for Business, New Working Environment, and lastly New Infrastructure Paradigms & Experimental Facilities, as Senior Policy Co-ordinator.
