Event theme: Open Innovation in advanced service-product development & in Collaborative Clusters

Open/Collective Innovation is being recognized as the crucial competitive leverage for European industry sustainability and the only feasible approach to address the societal challenges of the global competition and markets.

The ESoCE-Net Industrial Forum 2008 event aims at offering an opportunity to Industrial players from different market sectors and from different European Regions to Regional Development Agencies and local Government Bodies to discuss and learn how to mix the three main ingredients for regional success: Collaboration, Competitiveness and Innovation. The idea is to confront challenges, strategies and experiences, to discuss emerging issues and opportunities from the deployment of new methods and approaches for Regional Innovation, starting from space based technology sectors and extending the available practices to other economic and industrial contexts. The ESoCE-Net Industrial Forum 2008 is a one day event, organized into two sessions:

  • a morning session, built around a panel of representatives from major international enterprises, SME’s Clusters, Professional Associations and Policy makers, providing their own view on the emerging practices for Open-Collective Innovation
  • an afternoon session, organised in 3 parallel workshops:
* Demand Creation Mechanisms in Space Based Technology Clusters [1]
* Enterprise Interoperability and Collaboration Vision and Barriers [2]
* Living Labs and relevant innovation ICT enabled processes [3]

The event will be closed by a plenary session, aiming at summarising findings and discussing opportunities of launching joint initiatives.

ICT 2008 Workshops

European large scale Living Labs Pilots and Best Practices

Collaborating LL can create critical mass and impact to address societal challenges. Emerging pilots will cover several areas identified by CO-LLABS as the most promising ones to care about needs of today’s and tomorrow’s citizens: among them, e-Health and sustainable energy & intelligent traffic are lead markets that deserve a special attention. The results coming from the experience of the currently active Living Labs (51 LLs have already joined ENoLL in the two waves launched so far) have been analyzed and, further to the identification of the winning factors and of the critical points, Best Practices have been derived and proposed specifically to the Living Labs community (the current ENoLL members plus new emerging entities) and to the Open Innovation communities in general.

Living Labs Policies and Future Infrastructures

Living Labs are becoming a significant Europe-wide initiative. A Living lab Roadmap 2007-2008 has been developed, focusing on policy, infrastructure and research priorities to create networked systems for open, user driven research, development and innovation across Europe. This session aims to engage a thorough reflection on how to support further necessary developments, in particular establishing policy conditions for European Living Labs innovation and initiating next initiatives to strengthen the living labs infrastructures to enable user centric research and innovation, in order to ensure a consistent growth and sustainability of such living labs innovation environments across Europe. This session will be a wide debate inviting key stakeholders from the policy side, namely from all relevant DG's from the EC, as well as from the LL side, in order to present their own view from their specific responsibility domain, with the concern of addressing the issue from a global perspective.

First Annual ENoLL meeting

A two-day seminar with highlights the latest trends in eHealth, wellbeing, sport, and tourism will be held at Kainuu Living Lab - Snowpolis on August 21st-22nd, 2008. Snowpolis, the conference venue, is an international technology park, a member of ENoLL: main fields are sport, nutrition and winter technologies. In wellbeing technology, several product development and testing projects are going on. Physical condition check-up station is a good example.

In Snowpolis, there are several university units doing research in sport technology. The units are part of University of Jyväskylä and University of Oulu. 28 different companies have their offices in Snowpolis including the wellness hotel where the conference participants have their accommodation.

This event, which will be held at Hogeschool Leiden, will convene many interesting people, such as local and regional SMEs, other companies, participants from the Free Discovery projects and the Living Lab IPC project, local and regional policy makers, academics, the European Network of Living Labs and many others.

The Workshop on Open Innovation will be a very interesting chance to meet all these people working on the same topics. And together share, discuss and work on concrete projects that happen in the Leiden region and on capabilities for open innovation. Many interesting speakers are invited as well. [edit] 2nd EACE "e-Working Environments" Workshop

The EACE European project develops policy recommendations for the European Commission to expedite the adoption of collaborative working environments. Towards this end, EACE evaluated existing collaboration patterns and tools, and consolidated research results by identifying best practices, developing a theoretical framework of human collaboration and verifying the policy recommendations in pilot applications.

The workshop will discuss the findings of the project and present viewpoints and experiences from the industry, the research community and other stakeholder in order to stimulate discussion on the identified gaps between technological advancements and their practical application. The objective is to agree on a number of challenges and policy recommendations for expediting the further acceptance, development and implementation of e-Collaborative Environments.


The TOPICS of the workshop are:

  • Current and future policy frameworks aiming at accelerating the adoption of Collaborative e-Working Environments
  • Weaknesses and strengths of the available collaboration tools and platforms
  • Behavioural, organisational, socio-economic and regulatory factors that influence the adoption of electronic collaboration tools at the workplace
  • Role of knowledge management and social networks for improving collaboration

The 2nd Industrial Day on Collaborative Networked Organizations (CNOs), to be held in Brussels on 12th April 2007, is the second event aimed at providing practical solutions and advices to organizations interested in establishing advanced and innovative collaborative approaches within their business contexts.

The event is supported by ECOLEAD (http://www.ecolead.org), an integrated project funded by the EC IST-FP6 Programme aimed at developing technologies for networks of collaborative enterprises. ECOLEAD foresees that in ten years’ time, most enterprises will be part of one or more sustainable collaborative networks and aims at enhancing the added-value to businesses operating within these dynamic collaborative networks. The project is working closely with regional and international initiatives who act as multipliers for supporting the large deployment of the emerging CNO paradigms. ECOLEAD is developing framework models and ICT solutions to enable the competitiveness and the innovation in Collaborative and Innovative Organizations.

Köln 2007 was an opportunity to meet other people with similar or complementary research interests who wish to form project consortia.

After a short opening ceremony with speeches from Dr. Annette Schavan, German Federal Minister of Education and Research and Viviane Reding, European Commissioner for Information Society and Media, the rest of the day has been organised as an information fair, with no formal agenda.

Köln 2007 is essentially unstructured. What you get out of it depends on what you put in; the event has been structured around 40 "networking booths", each corresponding to one of the Objectives of the work programme.

The European Day of the Entrepreneur (EDE), traditionally organized by Sofia Municipality and Sofia University "St.Kliment Ohridski" has been carried out for the fourth time on 7-8 of November 2006 at the Inter Expo Center, Sofia. All the relevant Ministries and more than 20 important public, non-governmental and private structures were co-organizers of this significant forum. This year the EDE has been held under the motto “European Funds and Regional Development” related to the Bulgaria’s forthcoming membership in EU, and during the forum challenges in front of the business and local authorities for planning and implementing projects under the EC Structural Funds have been discussed.
